Empowering LGBTQI+ Leaders in Serbia
PROUD Leadership Academy is a six-month empowerment program that brings together young LGBTQI+ individuals from across Serbia. Through intensive training, mentorship, and hands-on work, participants develop leadership, public speaking, advocacy, teamwork, and project management skills.
The program aims to provide not only knowledge but also the support needed for personal and professional growth, empowering participants to become drivers of social change within their communities.
By connecting participants with professionals, mentors, and trainers from across the region, we are building a network of authentic, capable, and empowered individuals who contribute to positive change in organizations, companies, and society.
By supporting this program, you are investing in equality, sustainability, innovation, and economic growth.
Why Now?
Although Serbia’s Constitution and laws guarantee equality, LGBTQI+ individuals still face daily discrimination, invisibility, and exclusion, especially in education, employment, and the workplace.
This is not only a human rights issue but also a serious economic challenge. According to analysis from the Open for Business platform, the annual economic cost of LGBTQI+ discrimination in Serbia is estimated at RSD 47.3 billion (around 0.7% of GDP).
This loss is reflected in:
- Economic inequality: higher unemployment, lower income, limited labor market participation, and increased government spending (~RSD 40.5 billion annually).
- Health consequences: higher levels of depression and reduced access to healthcare (RSD 2.3–6.8 billion annually).
- Broader effects: reduced competitiveness, limited innovation and entrepreneurship, talent migration, and lower attractiveness for foreign investments.
As many companies withdraw DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) initiatives from their agendas, and international donors cut funding for inclusive programs, we must proactively build systemic support for LGBTQI+ youth.
Investing in LGBTQI+ leaders today means:
- Stronger loyalty, resilience, and innovation in teams
- Greater appeal to talented professionals
Long-term benefits for organizations and society
Program Structure and Content
The Academy includes thematic modules delivered through interactive workshops, group work, and ongoing mentorship:
PUBLIC NARRATIVE
Developed at Harvard Kennedy School, this model provides practical tools and strategies for leading in complex and uncertain environments. The focus is on adaptation, responsibility, and building leadership capacity to drive change in oneself and others.
This module explores how social movements build power and empower leaders at all levels. Participants learn how collective strength and organized action can drive change in contexts of power imbalance.
Focused on emotional resilience and mental wellbeing, this module offers practical tools for maintaining balance, overcoming internal barriers, and breaking down myths that hinder authentic resilience.
Participants craft their “story of self, us, and now”, a powerful tool for inspiring action and connecting with community values. Public narrative is a leadership practice for uncertain times, rooted in identity-building through storytelling.
An innovative problem-solving approach that includes five phases: empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. Participants learn how to design solutions that address real community or user needs.
Participants learn how to build a personal brand aligned with their values and market demands. The module helps develop a clear portfolio of skills and strategies for visibility and positioning in the job market.
This module analyzes historical and contemporary nonviolent movements worldwide, exploring strategies, structures, and approaches to successful activism and how it shapes communities and the future.
